We will engage in an Enlightenment Salon to learn about the new intellectual ideas of the AGE OF ENLIGHTENMENT which have influenced Western and Eastern thought since the 1700s. Just like the thinkers of the Enlightenment, we will gather in a Salon (meeting) to debate the new ideas of the day. To do this, you are each assigned a GROUP for researching and presenting your thinker’s ideas during a class debate. This debate is a stepping stone to prepare you for the unit final assessment. STEPS 1. Research your thinker use links provided first – work with your group to complete task *Everyone must become an expert on your thinker’s ideas J 2. Research – divide responsibilities *You should all be able to discuss the questions posted at bottom of page 3. Post your findings on the wiki where they can be reviewed by classmates 4. Be sure findings are clearly organized, easily accessible by others and clearly documented (MLA style) THE SALON – a ‘party’ where we debate the ideas from our thinker’s point of view After researching, you will get instructions on how to come prepared to Salon Topics to be discussed:You are to research and summarize your thinker’s ideas on the following topics/questions Brief biographical information – Why is your person famous, etc… Please avoid family history, where they went to school, etc… The thinker’s view on: 1. The Nature of Man (good or evil, etc…) 2. Best form of government - and why 3. View on Human Rights –be sure to consider Rights of Women 4. How did they view religion in society? 5. The ‘perfect society’ – According to the thinker, what would it look like? 6. How would your thinker critique today’s world? What would they admire and be dismayed by? Be sure to give examples… Note: For each topic, depending on your thinker, you will have more or less to say. Focus on the topics that are most significant for your thinker. Be short and to the point while explaining key ideas in your own words. You will need to infer some answers.
